Things to Do in Big Bend National Park with Kids

#1 Ride a Donkey to Boquillas, Mexico

Did you know Big Bend is the only U.S. National Park where you can legally cross into another country? Head to the Boquillas Crossing Port of Entry and take a short rowboat ride (or wade in the shallow water) across the Rio Grande into the charming village of Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico. Kids will love the novelty of riding a donkey into town (you can also walk or ride in a truck). Grab some tacos, shop for handmade crafts, and soak in the views.

Travel Tip: Bring passports for everyone—yes, even babies! The crossing is only open Wednesday through Sunday, so plan accordingly.

#2: Santa Elena Canyon

One of the most iconic hikes in Big Bend, the Santa Elena Canyon Trail is short (1.5 miles) and jaw-droppingly beautiful. Towering limestone walls surround you as you walk along the river. Kids will be in awe—and probably want to throw a few rocks into the water.

Travel Tip: Bring water shoes! Depending on the season, you might have to wade across Terlingua Creek at the beginning of the trail.

These are our favorites for hiking with kids!

#3: Stick Your Head in a T. Rex Mouth

Okay, not a real T. Rex—but the Fossil Discovery Exhibit is a dream for dino-loving kids! This outdoor museum features life-size models, real fossils, and interactive exhibits that walk you through the prehistoric creatures that once roamed this area.

Kid Favorite: The massive T. Rex skull replica makes for a hilarious photo op!

#4 Become a Junior Ranger

Stop by the Panther Junction Visitor Center, Chisos Basin Visitor Center, or Rio Grande Visitor Center and pick up a Junior Ranger activity book. Complete a few pages, attend a ranger program, or go on a hike—and your child can earn an official Junior Ranger badge. It’s a fun, educational souvenir and a proud moment for little explorers.

Travel Tip: Pick this up on your first day so the kids can enjoy the activities the whole time you’re visiting the park!

#5 Take a Float down the Rio Grande!

We had an unforgettable river float adventure with The Big Bend Boating & Hiking Company, and it was easily one of the highlights of our trip!

Along the way, we spotted wild horses, cows lounging on the riverbanks, curious snakes, and plenty of fish darting through the water. The kids loved throwing rocks into the river and just soaking up the peaceful surroundings.

We stopped for a sack lunch under the shade of a giant cottonwood tree before ending our float with a relaxing soak in the historic hot springs—total perfection for both kids and grown-ups!

Travel Tip: Bring plenty of sunscreen, hats, waterproof shoes or sandals, sunglasses & a sacked lunch!

#6: The Chisos Basin

The Chisos Basin will be closed for approximately 2 years starting in August of 2025! If you’re planning a trip this summer, definitely check it out, but if you are planning a trip after August, don’t worry, everything else on this guide is outside of that area!

  • Lost Mine Trail: If you have older kids, or a great hiking carrier, the Lost Mine Trail offers incredible views! It is around 5 miles (round trip) with an elevation gain of 1,130. Spots fill up quickly for parking, so you’ll want to come here early or later in the afternoon (depending on the heat!)

  • Chisos Basin Lodge & Visitor Center are great stops!

  • Window View Trail- This is a great .5 mile loop that is easy but offers a great view! Perfect with little ones!

#7 Terlingua Ghost Town

Terlingua Ghost Town is definitely a great stop on your trip to Big Bend with Kids!

  • Terlingua Trading Company-This is a great gift shop right next to Starlight Theater

  • Food Options: Starlight Theater, Espresso y Poco Mas, Taqueria el Milagro & DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ

  • Check out the historic Terlingua Cemetery

  • Pickleball- Enjoy a game of pickleball on the free outdoor court right in the middle of town with some great views of the mountains! These are our favorite paddles that Support our Beautiful National Parks!

Don’t forget your Parks Pass!! If you plan on going to more than 3 parks this year, the America The Beautiful Pass Pays for itself!!

Where to Stay: Big Bend National Park with Kids

We stayed here on our first trip as a couple, but the A-Frames would have the perfect set up for a family: King Bedroom with a separate space with a small kitchenette, pull out sofa & a private bathroom & shower!

There is also a clubhouse on site with fun games & the grounds are beautiful. The location is perfect, just minutes from Terlingua Ghost Town & the Big Bend National Park Entrance!

The Summit Big Bend

We loved the unique dome stay & stargazing at Summit Big Bend! Some of our favorite things were the common outdoor kitchen with fun yard games & a hammock for the kids to relax. In the domes, there was a comfortable king bed, pull out sofa & sink with a mini fridge!

Where to Eat-Big Bend National Park with Kids

These were our favorite spots to eat while on our trip:

  • Starlight Theater-Be there early to get on the waitlist & enjoy a cocktail on the deck or shopping next door!

  • Milky Way Treats-Ice Cream Stop

  • Venga-Perfect for a packed lunch on the river, but this is also a great spot for breakfast!

  • Long Draw Pizza-This made for a perfect casual dinner after a day of exploring! Their back patio has amazing views!

  • Espresso Y Poco Mas- We loved this spot so much we ate here twice for breakfast! We loved the breakfast burritos & smoothies!

Tips for Visiting Big Bend National Park with Kids

  • Pack Smart: Bring plenty of water, hats, sunscreen, and snacks.

  • Start Early: Beat the heat and avoid long afternoon hikes.

  • Fuel Up: There are few gas stations nearby, so fill up before entering the park.

  • Stargaze: Big Bend is one of the best places in the country for stargazing. Don’t miss the chance to watch the Milky Way light up the sky.

A weekend in Big Bend National Park with kids is truly unforgettable. From crossing international borders and hiking through ancient canyons to soaking in riverside hot springs and digging into the dino-filled past, this park is full of moments your family will be talking about for years to come.
